Chelsea are reportedly planning a surprise move for Bayern Munich's David Alaba as they seek to strengthen the left side of their backline.

The Blues have fared impressively in the league under Frank Lampard and they are currently in the fourth spot with 36 points on the board.

Still, they have had defensive concerns over the course of the campaign and the left-back position, in particular, has been problematic for the Blues head coach.

Emerson, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta have all been utilised in the spot and only the latter has managed to make a meaningful impression in a makeshift role.

According to ESPN, Lampard is keen on landing a specialist left-back this month and he has set his sights on Alaba, who has 18 months remaining on his contract at Bayern.

The Capital outfit are prepared to table a bid in the region of £60m for the Austrian and they are hopeful that the defender will be tempted by the prospect of a fresh challenge.

Chelsea are free to make new signings this month after winning their appeal against a FIFA-imposed transfer ban at the Court of Arbitration of Spot towards the end of last year.
