Manchester United, Arsenal to battle for 23-goal striker

David wanted by EPL giants

Manchester United and Arsenal are set to compete for the signature of Canadian striker Jonathan David from Gent, a report from HLN claims.

The 20-year-old has impressed for Gent this season with a tally of 23 goals and 10 assists from 40 appearances across all competitions.

This has caught the eye of several European clubs but HLN reports that United and Arsenal are presently leading the race to secure his services.

Both teams have held initial talks with the player's agent Nick Mavromaras and they are likely to make formal offers to Gent in the near future.

United are still looking for a new striker to replace Romelu Lukaku, who left the club last summer. Odion Ighalo has added depth in the position but he is expected to leave when his loan contract expires in January.

Meanwhile, the Gunners are unclear over the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whose contract expires in 12 months' time. They are likely to be tempted to sell him to find a replacement this summer.

Gent are expected to demand more than £22m to sanction David's sale.
