Chelsea want David Alaba

Chelsea are in the running to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba on a free transfer in the summer.

The Austrian's deal with the European champions expires in June and the club's hierarchy have confirmed that the contract talks have broken down.

It was recently claimed by The Guardian that Alaba had agreed to join Real Madrid and a four-year deal could be signed next month.

However, that has been rubbished by the player's father, who has emphasised that any decision may be delayed until the summer.

According to Bild, the Blues are interested in a move for Alaba and they have made contact with his representatives.

Blues recently appointed Thomas Tuchel as their new manager and the German is likely to focus on recruiting players from the Bundesliga.

Alaba, who can play at left-back, central defence or defensive midfield, has been identified as one of the top summer targets.

RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano is another player on Tuchel's radar. The centre-back has a £38m release clause which becomes active in June.
