United fail with opening bid for Varane

Manchester United have failed with an opening bid to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer.

The Red Devils have already agreed personal terms with the centre-back, and they are now in the process of negotiating a fee.

According to AS, the club recently made their opening offer of €40m (plus €5m in add-ons) for the central defender.

The proposal was immediately rejected by the Madrid giants, who are looking for at least €70m to sanction his sale.

Varane has entered the final year of his contract with Los Blancos, and he has shown no interest in extending his stay.

The club are prepared to cash in on his services, but won't do that on the cheap with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain keeping tabs.

Varane has the preference to join the Red Devils this summer, but he won't force an exit out of respect for Los Blancos.

The 28-year-old has made over 350 appearances in all competitions during his decade-long stay with the Bernabeu outfit.
