Manchester United legend Gary Neville has said that he is disappointed with Jesse Lingard's decision to stay at the club.

The attacker had a promising loan spell at West Ham United earlier this year, bagging nine goals and five assists.

He was fancied to make a permanent return, but a deal did not materialise before the summer transfer deadline.

United were holding out for around £25 million. The Hammers were reluctant to pay anything more than £15m for him.

Neville has now said that he is disappointed that Lingard did not head for the exit door unlike Daniel James, who left for Leeds United.

Lingard has 10 months remaining on his contract with United, and he could be fancied to sign a short-term extension.

While he was open to a new challenge this summer, he did not push for an exit and was happy to stay with the club.

It remains to be seen whether Lingard can reclaim a regular starting role.
