Manchester United eyeing deal for England goalkeeper

Sam Johnstone news

Johnstone wanted as De Gea's deputy

Manchester United are reportedly interested in re-signing former graduate Sam Johnstone on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

The England international is currently in his fourth campaign with the Baggies, but he could leave them when his contract expires in June.

West Ham, Tottenham and Southampton are keeping tabs on him, but they could face serious competition from the Red Devils.

David de Gea and Dean Henderson are presently the first and second-choice goalkeepers at United, but the latter is keen to leave.

Henderson has yet to make a Premier League appearance this campaign, and he is worried that this may end his international career.

The shot-stopper has been at cross roads with interim manager Ralf Rangnick, having been denied the chance to leave in January.

He is expected to push for a permanent exit this summer. It appears United will attempt to lure Johnstone back to the club on a free transfer.

Johnstone left Old Trafford permanently in the summer of 2018. He spent seven straight seasons on loan and never made his club debut.
