Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe had been looking to secure a transfer for Ekitike, but at the last minute a transfer fell through, believed to be due to personal terms.

Paris St Germain look set to beat Newcastle United to the signing of Reims' forward Hugo Ekitike, after a deal appeared to be confirmed on social media yesterday. The coveted striker, who scored 10 goals in 26 games for his club, is seen as one of the brightest attacking talents in French Ligue 1.

However it has now emerged that PSG made a last ditch effort to sign the striker, and the player's agents persuaded Ekitike that a move to the Ligue 1 champions would be better for his career development.

PSG's new sporting advisor Luis Campos made Ekitike his primary transfer target, having monitored the player personally on several occasions last season.

It is understood that PSG will be paying around 25 million euros to complete the signing, and Reims will receive a further 10 million euros based upon performances and player goalscoring records over the next two seasons.
