Raul de Tomas - a target for the Villans

Aston Villa have emerged as candidates to sign Espanyol forward Raul de Tomas, as the 27-year-old striker looks set to depart his club after just two seasons. Prior to Espanyol, Raul de Tomas was somewhat of a journeyman, having a spell playing for Benfica, Rayo Vallecano, Valladolid, Cordoba and Real Madrid, where he began his professional career.

The Madrid-born forward has 4 caps for the Spanish national side and originally joined Espanyol from Benfica in a deal worth 23 million euros. His value has surged since then, and now Villa are expected to pay closer to 33 million euros to sign the forward.

Bayern Munich have also been linked with a transfer for the striker, but Villa are supposedly leading the race.

Steven Gerrard's side have been locked in talks with Espanyol for over two weeks, and a bid is likely to be accepted shortly.

Espanyol chairman Mao Ye admitted the player could leave shortly, and told reporters: “There are days left in the market. And there are always possibilities (that De Tomas could leave). But we have him in our squad.”
