Chelsea make formal offer for Ajax midfielder

Chelsea have made a formal bid to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, according to De Telegraaf.

The Blues have already spent over £250 million on new signings this summer, but their spending spree could continue before the deadline.

A midfielder has been one of the priorities for the club, and De Telegraaf claim that they have made an official move to land Alvarez.

Ajax are reluctant to lose him with their transfer window closing tonight, but the Mexican is said to be determined to join the London giants.

The 24-year-old has been offered nearly five times of his current wages, and believes he may not get another chance of a similar kind.

Ajax are yet to accept the Blues' £42 million proposal, and the midfielder's departure may depend on whether the club can find a replacement.

That seems unlikely with the transfer window in Holland closing at 11pm tonight. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea can convince them.
