Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has revealed that he made the personal choice to reject Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

The Netherlands was the top defensive target for the Red Devils in June, but he made the decision to sign a new contract with Ajax instead.

It was widely reported that Dutch boss Louis van Gaal had influenced his choice after warning him over his place with the national team.

However, Timber has now come forward and revealed that Van Gaal was actually supportive of him joining the Red Devils this summer.

He said: "Many things that are written in the media are false. Like when people say that it was Louis van Gaal who told me not to go to Manchester United. He actually said I would make minutes there."

Timber is capable of playing at right-back or in central defence. Erik ten Hag viewed him as a competitor to Diogo Dalot this campaign.

A deal did not materialise with Timber wary of losing his World Cup spot, but United could return for him when the transfer window reopens.
