Club chief confirms Man Utd spoke with €50m attacker
PSV football director Marcel Brands has confirmed that Manchester United were in contact with Cody Gakpo this summer.
The Red Devils were eyeing two wide players during the recent transfer window and Gakpo was one of those linked.
However, they ended up signing only Antony from Ajax, having been made to pay a hefty fee of around €95 million up front.
Brands has now revealed that Gakpo was unsettled earlier this summer after speaking with the Red Devils over a potential move.
He added that United did make an attempt to sign him in mid-August, but their proposal was well below PSV's expectations.
Brands told Eindhovens Dagblad: "Cody has had a difficult preparation with us because he has spoken with Manchester United.
"They didn't come until mid-August and didn't go through. I even think Cody wouldn't have left at the end of the transfer window, if the right amount had been offered."
PSV were eyeing €50m for Gakpo's services, but United were unwilling to pay more than €29m after the huge outlay on Antony.
The Red Devils could return for the Netherlands international in January. Erik ten Hag will be backed with a reasonable budget.
