Inter Milan star Luis Figo has sent shockwaves in the football rumour market by expressing that he would like to retire from football at the Italian club with Jose Mourinho as coach.

Figo and Mourinho both are Portuguese and both foster a very conducive relationship with each other. Jose Mourinho is currently without a managerial role at any club after being sacked by Chelsea earlier this season but has been heavily touted to take over Inter Milan at the start of next season.

Figo said:

“It would be good to finish my career at Inter of Milan with Mourinho as the coach. I am not sure if he will come to Inter. I have seen all the media speculation and I would like to play under Mourinho.”

This expression for support for Mourinho as the next coach of Inter Milan has stark links with some other issues too, most notably the frosty relation that Luis Figo and the current Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini garner between themselves. The trouble between the two heavyweights in the Inter Milan unit rushed to the fore during Inter Milan’s defeat to Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League tie earlier this year.

At the time, Inter were losing their home match 1-0 and the tie 3-0 on aggregate when Mancini asked Figo to go on as a substitute. Figo refused to come onto the pitch but Mancini has subtly downplayed this fact. Yet there’s no denying that coach and player do not see eye to eye.

Roberto Mancini even tendered his resignation in the wake of that defeat but was persuaded to linger on. There have also been rumours that Figo would like to retire from football altogether at the end of the season but the Portuguese legend has quashed that speculation and has insisted that he would like to stay on for at least one more season at Inter Milan.

Inter president Massimo Moratti is a huge fan of Figo and wants the player to take up a boardroom position at the club as soon as he decided to hang up his boots.
