Man Utd made late loan move for former Chelsea star
Manchester United made a late move to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher on a season-long loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils were determined to land a new midfielder before the transfer deadline, and Gallagher emerged as a top target on deadline day.
United made an approach to sign the England international on loan, but Atletico were quite clear that they would not entertain such an offer.
Crystal Palace made a similar proposal on the table for their former player, but Diego Simeone's side were only willing to accept permanent bids.
Gallagher was likewise happy to continue with the Spanish giants. He could reassess his situation when the transfer window reopens this winter.
Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with the 25-year-old star earlier this summer, and they could compete with United for his services in January.
United are also looking at alternative options. Palace midfielder Adam Wharton could be another realistic target for the winter transfer window.
