Italian clubs wanted to sign Manuel Ugarte on loan
Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte was a loan target for several Italian clubs during the summer transfer window, as per Fabrizio Romano.
The Uruguay international joined the Red Devils from Paris Saint-Germain last year and it was predicted that he would displace Casemiro.
However, nothing of that sort has happened thus far. He has been playing second fiddle to the experienced Brazilian for the last few months.
Romano has now revealed that Ugarte had been on the radar of multiple Serie A clubs, but United opted against sanctioning his loan departure.
The Red Devils were already short in the department after the departure of Christian Eriksen and the loan exit of Toby Collyer this summer.
The club tried to recruit another midfielder before the transfer deadline, but they could not find a suitable solution due to different reasons.
United were priced out of a move for Brighton's Carlos Baleba while Atletico Madrid turned down a loan approach for Conor Gallagher.
