Kenny Miller's superb strike gave Derby a 1-0 win over Newcastle, their first of the season, after a dour affair at Pride Park.

Miller's 39th minute strike came after Newcastle failed to deal with Stephen Bywater's long goal kick. The ball landed at Miller's feet and he hit it from well outside the box, burying it in the top left hand corner of Steve Harper's goal.

Derby could've had more after Steve Howard had a hatrick of headed chances to make the game safe. Fortunately for Newcastle, Howard failed to convert any of these.

Newcastle may feel aggrieved that they weren't awarded atleast one penalty after Dean Leacock appeared to manhandle David Rozehnal atleast three times during the course of the game.

Rozehnal also had Newcastle's best chance after England striker Michael Owen rounded Stephen Bywater and put a low ball into the danger area that was fired just wide by the Czech centre back.

Owen was withdrawn in the second half in favour of Obafemi Martins and stormed down the tunnel, obviously unhappy at the decision.

Derby County hung on to the lead and were able to see out the game and drag themselves off the bottom of the table.
