Arsenal deploy scouts to monitor Mateo Mendoza

Arsenal have been monitoring the progress of defensive youngster Mateo Mendoza, currently playing for Godoy Cruz in Argentina. The 21-year-old is able to play in central defence and right-back both, which appeals to manager Mikel Arteta, who is seeking a backup for the out of action William Saliba.

The Gunners have been busy negotiating a deal for Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen's defender Jarrell Quansah, with Quansah apparently the new first choice defensive acquisition.

However, Leverkusen have quoted Arsenal a reported 55 million euros, a price that Andrea Berta is not willing to match. Therefore, a surprise target in Mateo Mendoza is now a possibility.

Mateo Mendoza has developed into one of Godoy Cruz’s most promising young defenders, establishing himself as a regular despite being only 21. The right-footed centre-back combines good mobility with an increasingly mature reading of the game, while his composure in possession gives him the tools to develop beyond Argentina.

Mendoza gained valuable top-flight and Copa Sudamericana experience during 2025 and has remained an important figure following Godoy Cruz’s relegation, playing more than 1,200 minutes in the 2026 Primera Nacional campaign. His consistency and experience at such a young age suggest considerable upside, with Mendoza potentially capable of earning a move to a bigger Argentine or European club.
