Aston Villa 1-0 West Ham

Aston Villa 1-0 West Ham

In a scrappy game Aston Villa defeated West Ham 1-0. Villa were impressive in the first half and Craig Gardner's 24th minute free kick off went in off Gabbidon to nab the three points for Villa. Aston Villa have won 4 home games in a row and at times played some outstanding football.

Aston Villa's dangerous looking attack consisting of Ashley Young, Gaby Agbonlahor and Luke Moore caused West Ham problems throughout the game, whilst West Ham looked blunt and did not really pressurise until the last 20 minutes. Aston Villa could've scored more and there were a few penalty shouts for each side, but the game finished up at 1-0.

The game was a heated affair with over 29 fouls, and 5 yellow cards given. West Ham controlled most of the possession, but Aston Villa looked superior whenever on the attack. West Ham suffered early on and made an early change with Henri Camara coming off for Carlton Cole.

Against the run of play, West Ham had the ball in the net in the ninth minute, though the effort was quickly ruled out. Matthew Etherington crossed, but Henri Camara's use of the hand in converting was blatant and he received a booking for his troubles.

The pressure paid off for Aston Villa on 23 minutes. Gabbidon tripped Agbonlahor 20 yards out and paid the ultimate price as it was his deflection that sent Craig Gardner's free kick past Green.

Cole, Noble and Boa Morte all missed early on to sacrifice a fantastic opportunity to get back in the game.

Aston Villa now move up to 5th in the league.
