Arsenal in control as Fenerbahce brushed aside

21 August 2013 - 22:11

Arsenal cruised to victory against Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying tie in Istanbul. Second half goals from Aaron Ramsey, Kieran Gibbs and Olivier Giroud secured a 3-0 away win and what is almost certainly their ticket to the group stage of the competition.

 • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
 • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
 • Fenerbahce played out a lacklustre performance as Arsenal dominated throughout. A goalless first half increased tension for the visitors but Kieran Gibbs' goal from a Theo Walcott cross gave a sigh of relief, before Aaron Ramsey's shot from distance made it past Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel.
The third goal came from a penalty after Michal Kadlec brought Walcott down in the penalty area, which was then converted by Giroud.
This victory is surely what Arsene Wenger needed after a disastrous start to the league campain with the 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa last week. It will surely give him a boost in the transfer market as well.
