Eagles set to swoop for Benteke

Eagles set to swoop for Benteke

30 June 2016 - 11:34

Crystal Palace are plotting a move for Christian Benteke as they look to bolster their strike-force for next season.  Having failed to adapt to the high pressing style demanded at Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp, the £32.5 million signing from Aston Villa last summer will now be allowed to leave Anfield and Eagles boss Alan Pardew has made the Belgian his number one target.

  • Previously linked with fellow Belgian Michy Batshuayi, who according to Sky sources is set to join Chelsea for £33 million following Euro 2016, Palace have now turned their attention to 25 year old Benteke.  With 49 goals in 100 appearances for Aston Villa much was expected of Benteke at Anfield but he struggled for form under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp last season, managing only 10 goals.  His failure to fully embrace the demands placed on the central striker in Klopp's preferred formation has propelled another fellow countryman Divock Origi to the front of the queue for a starting place.  However, Liverpool will still expect to recoup around £30 million for the striker and the Eagles are now set to swoop.

Pardew utilised Conor Wickham in the lone striker role for much of last season, with the enigmatic Emanuel Adebayor providing competition.  Benteke will be viewed as an upgrade on both and Palace now appear set to break their transfer record to entice Benteke to the capital and help him recapture his best form.
