Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is hoping that the signing of Shkodran Mustafi would convince Mesut Ozil to stay put at the club. The German international has stalled on talks over a fresh contract.
The 27-year-old has been a key performer for the Gunners in recent seasons, but the lack of Premier League success may well lead him to a fresh challenge elsewhere.
According to The Mirror, the Gunners made their move to land Mustafi in a bid to keep hold of his fellow countrymate.
Ozil was apparently unhappy with the transfer business over the transfer window before the Gunners announced the double signing of Mustafi and Lucas Perez from Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna respectively.
The German is likely to be offered fresh terms in the coming weeks as the club look to commit him to a long-term contract. The midfielder currently has two years left on his existing deal.
