Michael Carrick inks one-year extension

Manchester United have reportedly rewarded midfielder Michael Carrick with a year's extension following his impressive showing during the 2016/17 season.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • The former England international had initially struggled for playing time following the arrival of Jose Mourinho at the helm.

However, the club's average start of the campaign, Mourinho opted to rely on the presence of Carrick in his midfield, and this paid dividends as the club went on a 25 match unbeaten league streak - which eventually ended with 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Carrick had recently stressed that it would be hard to feature for fellow league rival next season, and he would consider retiring from the game altogether, should he fail to earn an extension at Old Trafford.

The 35-year-old has now put pen to paper on a fresh one-year deal with the Red Devils, who managed to qualify for the Champions League by virtue of their Europa League success.

"What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet. I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue," he told the club's official website.

Carrick has spent almost a decade since his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, and he is due to play his testimonial next weekend which will include the likes of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand.

The veteran appeared in 38 games for Manchester United in all competitions this term - 30 of them being from the off.
