John Carew thanked his Aston Villa teammate Gareth Barry for his part in helping the striker get his first Aston Villa hattrick. Barry forfeited the opportunity to take a penalty kick to ensure Carew got three goals.
"It was a difficult first half," he stated after the game. "It was close one time [when he nearly scored], but it was not easy to get chances.
"Then Marlon came in for the second half, and he gave us an extra lift. We started creating chances.
"It is fantastic, really. Gary [Gareth Barry] said I could take it, and I am thankful for that.
"I decided to smash that one in. I don't usually smash them in, but I decided to go for it."
