Batshuayi nets last minute winner to give Chelsea win at Atletico Madrid

Chelsea overcame what was the toughest challenge in their Champions League group thanks to a last-minute winner from Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Conte was surely resigned to a frustrating night in Europe, settling for a draw in a match where Chelsea were the better team by far. They pegged Atletico Madrid back for most of the match and had chance after chance wasted.

However, Atletico Madrid took the lead, much against the run of play, five minutes before halftime. David Luiz daftly pulled the shirt of Lucas Hernandez while defending a corner kick, which led to a penalty. Antonie Griezmann, who was contained very well by the Chelsea defence, blasted the penalty down the middle of the goal.

The dressing room conversation from Conte must have been for Chelsea to do more of the same but to start converting chances. Eden Hazard put in an excellent performance, weaving through the characteristically tight Atletico backline with ease and creating many chances.

Their hard work finally paid off on the hour mark. Morata met yet another cross from Hazard on the left but this time managed to flick the ball into the back of the net.

The former Real Madrid man, who failed to score against Atletico Madrid in six appearances against them previously, celebrated wildly.

The Blues pressed on but were finding it hard to get a winner. With eight minutes left, Conte, who possibly had one eye on the clash against Manchester City this weekend, took off Hazard and Morata for Willian and Batshuayi.

With just a minute remaining, Willian started the Chelsea move from a free kick near the halfway line. He decided against going long and instead played it short to Christensen. A lovely exchange including Kante, Marcos Alonso, and Bakoyoko led to a cross to Batshuayi who slotted home the winner in what was literally the last kick of the game.
