Klopp unsure over extent of Matip's injury

Liverpool boss provides worrying update on Joel Matip's injury

23 July 2018 - 10:21

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that there is a concern regarding Joel Matip, who picked up a fresh thigh injury during the friendly game against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday night.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • The Cameroonian footballer sustained the problem during the early phase of the 3-1 friendly defeat in North Carolina and he was replaced by Joe Gomez in the 22nd minute.

Following the game, Klopp admitted that Matip has suffered a fresh tear on a different thigh muscle and he is unsure over the timeline required for the recovery.

He said: "It's not the same injury. It's another muscle - it looks like, hopefully, only a little tear. We will see, but we cannot say any more about it now. It is of course the most negative thing about the day. It's not cool."

Klopp added that the centre-back would be assessed in the next couple of days to know the exact extent of the damage and probable date for his comeback.

With Matip's injury, Liverpool are down to just three recognised centre-backs in the form of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Ragnar Klavan with Dejan Lovren still on a vacation following his World Cup exploits.
