Ex-Manchester United defender speaks on the lack of new centre backs at Old Trafford

Ex-Manchester United defender Wes Brown does not believe that it is a disaster that United did not bring in new centre backs during the summer transfer window.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • United were linked with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Leonardo Bonucci, and Jerome Boateng, but they did not sign any of them.

The Old Trafford side only bought upcoming 19-year-old right-back Diogo Dalot from FC Porto.

When asked if not signing a central defender is a disaster, he told Starsport: “Not at all. You look at last season, you talk about defence - we were second best in the league."

Manchester United's goalkeeper David de Gea won the Premier League golden glove award last season after amassing 18 clean sheets.

The 2008 UEFA Champions League winner believes that the current central defenders are more than capable of doing the job this season.

He also added that the competition for places in central defence will be a good thing for Jose Mourinho's side.

United currently have Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Marcos Rojo as their main central defenders.
