David de Gea set for Paris Saint-Germain move?

Manchester United are understood to have given up on the prospect of keeping goalkeeper David de Gea amid his reluctance to extend his contract beyond June 2018.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip

  • The Spain international has been United's leading performer over the past five seasons and this has witnessed him secure the club's Player of the Year award on four occasions.

Despite this, there have remained question marks over his future with United failing to compete regularly for the Premier League title and The Mail suggests that he could pursue a new challenge next summer.

United currently have the option of a one-year extension clause which they are expected to trigger by the start of 2019 but it is suggested that they could still sanction his sale next summer to avoid the risk of losing him on the cheap.

Real Madrid have been long linked with a move for the Spain international but they are unlikely to make an approach any longer after sealing Thibaut Courtois' signature from Chelsea last summer.

However, the Spaniard could still secure a big-money switch next summer with Paris Saint-Germain currently among the favourites to prise him away from Old Trafford in a deal worth £60m.

Everton and England's number one Jordan Pickford has been widely earmarked as a probable successor for De Gea at United when the current campaign comes to a conclusion.
