Chelsea striker activates one-year contract extension

Abraham extends his Chelsea contract until June 2023

Chelsea striker activates one-year contract extension

10 July 2020 - 17:49

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has activated a one-year extension on his contract after reaching the target for goals and games, The Guardian claims.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Mikel Arteta confirms big injury boost for Spurs clash

  • The England international has been the Blues' top-scorer this term with 16 goals, but his form has been average since the turn of the year.

A couple of injuries have contributed to the slow progress while he has faced competition from Olivier Giroud, who has been scoring regularly over the past eight league games.

Abraham's £50,000-a-week deal with the club was initially due to expire in June 2022, but he has now extended his stay for another 12 months by activating a clause for reaching his target for goals and games.

The west London side have been unable to negotiate an improved deal with Abraham, but the striker's decision to prolong his stay, offers them additional time to renew his contract.

It has emerged that he wants at least £130,000-a-week in wages to sign a new long-term contract and it remains to be seen whether the hierarchy will meet his demands based on his displays this term.
