Liverpool prepared to extend defender's contract

13 July 2020 - 19:54

Liverpool are prepared to extend the contract of Dejan Lovren by another 12 months, a report from Sky Sports News claims.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Burnley clash
  • Man Utd attacker suspended for Brentford game

  • The Croatia international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield and he is currently regarded as a back-up option behind Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

As a result, he has been fancied to head for the exit door for a while, but according to Sky Sports News, the Reds are planning to prolong his stay by triggering the extension clause.

Lovren's current deal with the club expires at the end of next season and the Merseyside giants are aiming to exercise the option to keep him for another campaign.

The former Southampton man has been heavily linked with a move away from Reds and the likes of AS Roma and Zenit St Petersburg have previously been credited with an interest in signing him.

However, with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the Reds are not in a position to make any marquee signings and they seem prepared to keep him rather than investing more money on a replacement.
