Premier League transfer talk: all in or bust for Pardew

Premier League transfer talk: all in or bust for Pardew

Alan Pardew: under pressure

Newcastle have enforced their reputation as one of the Premier League's stingiest clubs in recent seasons, but under fan pressure the Toon Army have spent big so far this summer.

After a disappointing season last campaign, Alan Pardew was not a popular man at St James' Park. Pardew sold Newcastle's best midfielder, Yohan Cabaye, then failed to replace him. For many, until this summer he had yet to replace Andy Carroll, who departed for Liverpool back in 2011. Pardew's team have struggled to show the form you might expect with the talent they have in their ranks and having spent big this summer, Alan Pardew's future is in some doubt if he fails to produce in the 2014-15 season.

For many, Newcastle have spent well in the transfer window so far. Having sold Mathieu Debuchy on to Arsenal; there remains a need to sign more backup for him at right back. However, Pardew moved quickly to replace Dan Gosling with a move for Jack Colback from bitter rivals Sunderland and the departure of long serving forward Shola Ameobi meant the Toon Army brought in two new attacking faces, Emmanuel Riviere and Ayoze Perez.

But most importantly it appears that Alan Pardew has decided to strengthen his midfield, particularly in the creative department. The arrival of Siem De Jong is a huge win for Newcastle. He is one of Europe's best and most creative, yet underrated players, so will add some good quality to Newcastle's side. Even more useful is the arrival of Remy Cabella, who has been linked with numerous teams for the last two years. Newcastle spent big to sign De Jong and Cabella and both will be looking to reward Pardew with goals and assists.

However, as previous seasons have shown, completely revamping your squad ahead of a new season doesn't always work. Take a look at QPR, who failed in the Premier League two seasons ago, having chopped and changed their squad prior to the new season.

Newcastle have brought in at least four new guaranteed starters and Alan Pardew could still be heading for the chopping block. If Newcastle start their season in poor shape, expect to see talk of a replacement before the start of October.

For Alan Pardew, it's all in or bust.
