Welbeck could be the signing of the summer: Owen
Former England international Michael Owen feels Arsenal managed themselves a great deal by bringing in Danny Welbeck to North London.
The 23-year-old forward moved to the Emirates Stadium on a five year contract for £16 million from his boyhood club Manchester United as a deadline day transfer.
The English player had made 142 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring on 29 occasions but failed to cement his place as a first team regular.
However days after joining the Gunners, Welbeck starred for his national side scoring both goals for England, as the Three Lions defeated Switzerland 2-0 in their first 2016 Euro Championship qualifier last night.
And Owen, who has played with him at Old Trafford, feels Arsene Wenger’s side have scored a bargain by signing the talented winger.
“He has always had doubters and I can understand why but I have always been a big fan of Danny's”, the 34-year-old was quoted as saying by ITV.
“I think he is a pretty good buy for Arsenal. They are the big winners here, with Danny himself. I can see him really improving.
“With Arsenal I think he will be given that chance to play in the middle and I think it could be one of the signings of the summer”, the former Liverpool and Manchester United player added.
Welbeck will be hoping to make his debut with his new club when Arsenal host reigning champions Manchester City on Saturday.
