Newcastle join Downing chase

Newcastle United have become the latest club to be interested in signing West Ham United's Stewart Downing,

Recent reports have cited that the former Liverpool midfielder may be offloaded this summer, following the arrival of Dimitri Payet from Marseille.

Sunderland and former club Middlesbrough were believed to be interested in the player's services, but The Mail now cites that the Magpies have joined the pursuit as manager Steve McClaren aims to strengthen the club's wide areas during the summer transfer window.

Downing was one of the stand out performers for the Hammers last term.
