Mourinho still wants defensive reinforcements

Manchester United could yet make late moves to sign defenders Fabinho and José Fonte, but they must first offload some high earning squad players, according to reports.

Duncan Castles, who is known to have strong contacts within José Mourinho’s camp, is reporting in the Daily Record that, despite the United boss claiming that the club will do no more business this summer, the Red Devils are in fact looking to add a defender or two before the transfer deadline closes on Wednesday.

Castles claims that United must first either sell or loan out some high earning squad players to reduce the wage bill before making any further additions, but Mourinho remains keen on signing Southampton captain José Fonte and AS Monaco right-back Fabinho.

It is believed that United are willing to part ways with Marcos Rojo, with the Argentinian international defender attracting interest from Valencia.

Castles also reports that Mourinho would be willing to allow Matteo Darmian, who was signed from Torino 12 months ago for £14 million, to return to Italy if an offer was received, while Phil Jones would be allowed to leave the club on loan.

If United are successful in offloading some of these players, they would then look to add an experienced centre-back – with Fonte being on the shortlist of options – and a top class right-back.

Fabinho would likely cost around €25 million plus add-ons if he is to be prised away from Monaco.
