James McCarthy on Crystal Palace radar

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is hopeful of securing a deal for Everton's James McCarthy before the transfer deadline. Celtic and Newcastle United are also in the running for his signature.

The Republic of Ireland is currently weighing up his options with manager Ronald Koeman preferring to play Gareth Barry and summer signing Idrissa Gueye in the central midfield role.

According to The Mirror, the 26-year-old wants his way out of Goodison Park after he fell out-of-favour under the new management. 

Championship side Newcastle United are rumoured to be readying a £20m bid for McCarthy, but Palace are hopeful that the midfielder would snub their advances for a switch to South London this summer.

Pardew's side are for now reluctant to match the Toffees' £20m valuation for the player, and this could hinder their pursuit.

Scottish champions Celtic are keeping a close eye on the proceedings, and could make a late raid for the former Wigan man.
