Diego Simeone is set to leave Atlético Madrid at the end of next season, which could open the door for Manchester United to sign Antoine Griezmann, according to reports.

Spanish media outlet El Confidencial is reporting that Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone will step down from his post as manager of last season’s Champion’s League runners-up at the end of the 2017-18 season, despite being under contract until 2020.

It is believed that the Argentinian coach is keen to take control of another of his former clubs, Inter Milan, but he first wants to manage Atlético in their new stadium which will be opened next season.

The Mirror believes that this news could open the door for Manchester United to swoop for Los Colchoneros star striker Antoine Griezmann, after the French forward last week claimed that he will only look to leave Atléti when Simeone departs.

Griezmann has been in outstanding form for the Spanish club since his 30 million move from Real Sociedad two years ago. The 25-year-old has scored 57 goals in 107 appearances for the Vicente Calderon club, and was also the top scorer at the recent UEFA European Championship in France, in which he helped the home nation reach the final and was voted player of the tournament.

Griezmann has a €100 million release clause which would be enough to discourage most clubs from making a bid. But with their €105 million Purchase of Paul Pogba this summer, United have shown that such a fee is not beyond their means.
