Man United scout Gimenez

Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Atletico Madrid's Jose Gimenez as Jose Mourinho plots to strengthen his defence during the winter transfer window.

The Red Devils did manage to recruit Eric Bailly from Villareal in the summer, but the need for an additional centre-half remains the club's priority with Phil Jones yet to get over his fitness concerns.

The Sun claims that the Special One has sent scouts to watch the player in action for the coming games with a view to lodging an offer for his signature in the New Year.

Premier League rivals Arsenal were rumoured to have failed with a £30m approach for Gimenez over the summer, and this suggests that United would have to cough up at least £45m if they are to persuade Atleti into a sale.

The 21-year-old has appeared in over 65 outings for Atletico Madrid in all competitions. He has a £56m release clause in his present deal.
