Liverpool defeat minnows
Liverpool survived a potential FA Cup shock, as Havant and Waterlooville took the lead early on at Anfield but ended up losing 5-2. It would've been a typical FA Cup fairytale, but it just wasn't to be, and Liverpool head into the fifth round. Liverpool fought back from being behind twice.
Five minutes in, the Blue Square South side had the cheek to break Liverpoolâs offside trap and force Skrtel into a goal-saving tackle from Potter. Just a warning surely.
Jermaine Pennant quickly set up Benayoun for an open goal which the Israeli missed â but Reds fans barely groaned as they settled back in anticipation of a plethora of goals from their heroes. How wrong they were.
Less than 10 minutes had been played when Havant earned their second corner, and when Liverpool goalkeeper Charles Itandje decided not to collect the ball four yards out, Peter Crouchâs former team-mate Richard Pacquette did a fine impression of the England striker to head home at the near post.
27 minutes gone and parity and reality was finally restored. Lucas bent home the most delicious of 25-yarders. Liverpool were level for all of three minutes as Havant poured forward again, first down the right through Pacquette, and then crucially down the left as Steve Finnan trod on the ball to allow Potter to silence The Kop for 2-1.
The Israeli netted a quick-fire hat-trick in a 15-minute period either side of half time, first side-footing into the left corner and then swivelling and firing off the underside of the bar to put the Merseyside club ahead for the first time in 56 minutes. A tap-in completed the hat-trick on the hour.
Late on, Peter Crouch finished off the job to survive probably the biggest FA Cup shock of all time - which, for a while - looked like it might happen.
