Premier League Teams Crash Out Of The FA Cup

Sean Raggett's goal sent Lincoln City through to the next round

The FA Cup attracts millions of viewers every single year, as they watch on in hope of witnessing a shock result in a footballing fairytale that sees the unglamourous realities of lower league football coming up against their elite counterparts from the Premier League.

Today's fifth round fixtures assured that those hoping for a shock were not disappointed.

The day's early kick off saw Premier League Burnley hosting National League leaders Lincoln City. Burnley not only boasted a much larger stature, but came into the game with a very good home record at Turf Moor. They had the majority of possession, as expected, and produced 17 shots on goal, all of which failed to give them the lead. With the game heading into stoppage time, and a replay, which would have been a fantastic result for non-league Lincoln, looking likely, The Imps mustered their first attempt on target, as defender Sean Raggett headed home from close range. As the Burnley goalkeeper scrambled to keep out the effort, goal line technology, a novelty which is unknown to Lincoln, was required to confirm their place in the next round. Lincoln become the first team to reach the final eight of the FA Cup in 103 years.

Elsewhere, League One Millwall, who were reduced to ten men in the second half, beat Premier League champions Leicester City to reach the quarter finals, and Championship Huddersfield Town held Manchester City to a goalless draw.

It wasn't all bad news for Premier League teams, as Chelsea beat Wolves 2-0 and Middlesbrough avoided a scare against Oxford United, coming out 3-2 winners.

The other non-league team left in the competition, Sutton United, will look to keep the underdog's fairytale continuing on Monday night, as they host Arsenal
