Emre Can stunner keeps Liverpool third
After Manchester City and Manchester United drew their games at the weekend, Liverpool went into Monday night's Premier League fixture at Watford holding on to third place. Defeat could have seen the Anfield side drop below City on goal difference.
With the race for the Premier League title now a two horse race, the battle immediately below Chelsea and Tottenham is heating up, as several teams continue to compete for a top four finish. The failure of both Manchester clubs to win over the weekend meant that Liverpool stayed third and had the chance to open up a three point gap against Watford.
In a game that offered little else, it was a sensational strike from Liverpool midfielder Emre Can that separated the two sides. In stoppage time of the first half, Lucas Leiva delivered a diagonal ball from the right hand side, which was met by Can, who produced a breathtaking overhead kick from the edge of the box to beat Heurelho Gomes in the Watford goal.
That was the only goal of the match, and it was one that was worthy of winning any fixture. Liverpool have now played one more game than the teams directly below them, but at this stage of the season, they would much prefer to have the points on the board.
