Watford linked with former Arsenal captain
With Premier League safety looking a certainty for Watford, they start to look ahead to the summer transfer window, and how they will strengthen for the new season. One man that could be brought in to strengthen the Hornets' defence is former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
Vermaelen left Arsenal for a move to Barcelona in 2014 and currently finds himself on loan to Serie A club AS Roma. His career has been plagued with injuries, in particular the last few years, meaning that a departure from the Nou Camp looks likely.
The Sun reports that Walter Mazzarri is keen to add to defence of the Vicarage Road club, and sees thirty one year old Vermaelen as a solid investment. The Belgium international has great ability that would certainly add to Watford, but his injury record suggests that a move for him may be a risk.
If their interest continues, one bonus is that Vermaelen's wife is English, and reports suggest that the couple are keen for a return to London with their family.
Watford need just one point from their final three Premier League matches to guarantee safety, although fixtures against Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City will make that task difficult.
