Jose Mourinho insists Luke Shaw has to improve

Mourinho - Shaw must show improvement on the training ground

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has stressed that Luke Shaw needs to show progress on the training pitch in order to step into the starting lineup on a regular basis.

The England international is unlikely to feature against his former club on Saturday afternoon despite making a second-half appearance in the 4-1 League Cup win over Burton Albion on Wednesday night.

Mourinho was critical of Shaw's attitude on the pitch prior to his foot injury against Swansea City in late April, and he insists that the game at St.Mary's will come too early for the Englishman.

"He has to work. You saw the [Burton] game, you saw the same as I see, so are you asking if he plays [against Southampton]? No, he is not playing. He has to work. He has to improve," he is quoted as saying by ESPN.

Luke Shaw joined the Red Devils from the Saints back in the summer of 2014, and he has since been restricted to just 48 appearances due to a series of injuries - including a double leg break in 2015.

The left-sided defender managed just 11 league appearances during Mourinho's first season in-charge, and he may have to work harder this time around to achieve a similar tally.
