Iniesta signs lifetime deal with Barcelona

Andres Iniesta has committed his future to Barcelona for the remainder of his career by signing a 'lifetime contract'.

The 33-year-old has turned out 639 times for Barcelona, and he is only behind Xavi (767) in the overall appearance record for the Catalan giants.

There were initial doubts that Iniesta could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, but this speculation has been put to an end by Barcelona, who announced a lifetime deal with the midfielder.

"Andres Iniesta signed a lifetime contract with FC Barcelona on Friday, in a deal that will keep him at the club for the rest of his career," a statement read on the club's official website.

Iniesta has been Barcelona's official captain since the 2015/16 season, and he shares a joint record with Lionel Messi of having won 30 titles with the Catalonia-based club.

Ernesto Valverde's side have made a strong start to the campaign with seven victories out of seven in La Liga, and they are currently top of the table with 21 points.

Barcelona take on Atletico Madrid in their next league outing from the newly-built Wanda Metropolitano following the international break.
