Arsene Wenger fears long-term injury for Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is fearful that Henrikh Mkhitaryan may have suffered a long-term injury during the Europa League game against CSKA Moscow.

Speaking in his press conference, Wenger confirmed that Mkhitaryan could miss a sizeable chunk of playing time, having sustained a damage to his medial ligament.

When asked further about the extent of the problem, the Frenchman was unsure, though he confirmed that the Armenian is certainly out for the league clash against Southampton.

"He has a scan this afternoon but his medial ligament is touched so he will not be available for Sunday," Wenger is quoted as saying on the club's website.

"He will not play. For how long he will be out we will know that after the scan. But the first impression is not too positive today. I fear [it could be several weeks] and I hope I’m wrong."

Mkhitaryan has been impressive since his winter switch to the Gunners with two goals and a further five assists across all competitions, and any long-term concern may come as a blow, especially for the Europa League.

Arsenal are most likely to qualify for the semi-final of the competition after a comfortable 4-1 win over CSKA in the quarter-final first-leg last night. Both Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette bagged braces for the club.
