Arsenal reward midfielder with new long-term contract

Xhaka extends Arsenal contract

Arsenal have confirmed that Granit Xhaka has penned a new long-term deal with the club. The midfielder is currently with the Switzerland national team at the summer World Cup.

Xhaka was fairly inconsistent with his performances for the Gunners during the previous campaign but the club's hierarchy have still valued his services by offering him a fresh extension.

"I'm delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He's an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more," Emery told the club's official website.

The Swiss is one of nine Arsenal players who are presently at the summer World Cup and he may report late for pre-season, should his country progress beyond the group stage.

Meanwhile, the Gunners are currently said to be on the search for a new central midfielder and widespread sources that they are seemingly close to acquiring the signature of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria.
