Manchester United have reportedly reverted their plans to sell Luke Shaw and are now prepared to reward him with a new long-term contract.

The England international was restricted to just eight league starts last season with Ashley Young being the preferred choice for the left-back role but he has still expressed his desire to fight for his position.

As such, United are keen to extend his contract beyond the summer of 2019 and the deal could potentially shelve their plans to pursue a new left-back this summer, M.E.N reports.

Juventus' Alex Sandro has been heavily linked with a move to United since the close of the previous campaign but a move now appears in doubt with the club reluctant to match his £53m price tag.

In this regard, Mourinho appears content on utilising both Young and Shaw for the left-back duties next term and the focus is now expected to shift towards signing an experienced centre-back for the club.

Atletico Madrid's Diego Godin has been linked with United of late amid his impressive showing for Uruguay at the World Cup. The 32-year-old could be available for an £18m fee with his contract expiring in 12 months' time.
