Manchester United respond to Tottenham interest in Anthony Martial

Spurs fail with initial approach for Martial

Manchester United have reportedly snubbed an opening enquiry from Tottenham Hotspur to pursue the signature of out-of-favour winger Anthony Martial.

The France international has struggled to cement a regular role under Jose Mourinho over the past two seasons and he is now being linked with a summer exit with his contract expiring 12 months' time.

Spurs have been noted to be monitoring the Frenchman over the past month and according to the Manchester Evening News, they are said to have failed with an initial approach for the attacker.

It is added that United remain reluctant to sell to a direct league rival but they could still do business with Spurs, should they recoup the entire £56m paid to recruit Martial from Monaco in 2015.

Martial made just 18 Premier League starts during the recently concluded campaign and he found himself behind winter signing Alexis Sanchez in preference for the left-wing role in the backend of the season.
