De Gea to be dropped by Spain

Spain's caretaker manager Fernando Hierro is contemplating the prospect of dropping goalkeeper David de Gea after his average showing during the group stage of the World Cup.

The Manchester United star conceded five goals during the first round of the tournament and he was heavily criticised by the country's faithful for his howler which handed Portugal a point in the opening game.

According to Metro, the 27-year-old is expected to be replaced by Athletic Bilbao's Kepa Arrizabalaga for the Russian encounter after failing to convince the manager of his abilities.

It is added that United boss Jose Mourinho has already sent a message of support to the shot-stopper, who is said to be close to penning a five-year deal with the Mancunian giants.

Spain have been regarded as one of the favourites to clinch the World Cup crown this term but so far, they have looked vulnerable in the backline which they may need to improve heading into the knockouts.
