Ferdinand praises Fellaini after Belgium win over Japan

Former England international, Rio Ferdinand has praised Marouane Fellaini after his performance in Belgium's 3-2 win over Japan in the second round of the ongoing World Cup in Russia.

Fellaini scored the second goal of the game and was a threat for the Japanese side during the game.

Speaking on BBC One, the former Leeds and Manchester United defender said: "Like him or hate him, Fellaini is effective. He makes it difficult for defenders and he attacks balls in and around the opposition box."

Fellaini was not a regular in the group stage, but he could be very important for the Belgians as they bid to go further into the competition with the need for tactics increasing.

Fellaini has come under criticism especially from Manchester United fans, but the former Everton man has signed a two-year contract with Manchester United, sending a signal to fans that manager Jose Mourinho is very much interested in what the big man has to offer.

Belgium will now face Brazil in the quarter-final. It is a game that promises to be entertaining, and will test both side's title credentials.
