Former Newcastle striker, Alan Shearer has said that the Three Lions of England were professional and thorough in their 2-0 win over Sweden in the quarter-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli ensured the English a semi-final place in the Mundial for the first time since 1990.

Shearer also praised goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford after he made world class saves to ensure that England go through to the last four.

"We were professional and thorough and every single player played their part, but Pickford was outstanding in goal when he had to be, when they got through our defence," Shearer said, BBC reports.

The England squad have come a long way after failing to qualify from the group stage in Brazil four years ago.

As it stands, this team has done better than the so-called Golden Generation that serially failed when it mattered in the big competitions.

Kudos has to go to Gareth Southgate who has instilled discipline and payed attention to detail so far.

The players have also shown that team work and not just having big players can take you far in major competitions.
