Enrique praises De Gea after England showing

Spain manager Luis Enrique has singled out David de Gea for praise after the Manchester United goalkeeper starred in the Nations League triumph over England.

The 27-year-old had received plenty of criticism from Spanish supporters after his average performance at the summer World Cup but he has since made amends with a match-defining performance versus the Three Lions.

Against Gareth Southgate's side, De Gea was called into action on a number of occasions and he made a crucial save off a Marcus Rashford header in the first half which was eventually key to the 2-1 triumph.

Following the game, Enrique said that he never doubted the qualities of De Gea and he was pleased with the shot-stopper learning from his previous mistakes.

He said: "I'm especially happy about David's performance. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has proven it in the Premier League week in, week out. I never had any doubts. Errors sometimes help you to improve and grow up."

De Gea has been impressive for club and country since returning from a forgettable World Cup but he has managed just one clean sheet from the five matches played.

Up next, La Roja are scheduled to host World Cup finalists Croatia in their second Nations League game and De Gea should be expected to start between the sticks once more.
