Liverpool midfielder confirms Tottenham approached to sign him
Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino had sought to sign him before he headed to Liverpool in the summer of 2016.
Back then, the Dutch footballer had decided to part ways with Newcastle United following their relegation from the Premier League and he eventually decided to join the Reds after holding talks with several other sides.
In a report covered by The Telegraph, Wijnaldum disclosed that he had met with Spurs boss Pochettino to discuss a probable move but the Reds were quick to push through a transfer agreement.
"I met [Mauricio] Pochettino when I left Newcastle. I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly," he is quoted as saying by the publication.
Wijnaldum made the comments in an interview prior to the Spurs clash on Saturday afternoon where he made his mark by scoring the opener in the Reds' 2-1 triumph.
The result maintains Liverpool's perfect start to the new season but they have dropped to second in the standings after Chelsea surpassed them via goal difference.
